1. What does the Course cover?

The course covers techniques and scope of inspection, various types of home inspections, equipment required to perform the inspections, legislation in South Africa and the Code of Ethics, the inspection process and producing an inspection report. The easy to use software provides you with the templates to produce a professional Home Inspection Report.

The Course is completed by correspondence and you will be required to complete 11 Modules with self evaluation Tests and a Final Exam. Once the Final Exam has been completed, students must carry out 3 Practical Home Inspections on the homes of family and friends, according to the format as provided by the Sample Home Inspection and using the Word templates provided. These must be submitted to THITA for marking to finalise the student’s course.

2. How long does the course take?

Distance Learning Course

We recommend you allow approximately 13 weeks for the completion of the course, but we have had applicants complete it in as little as 2 weeks – it all depends on the time and resources you have available.

The final examination is open book, which you complete at home and send back to us for grading. Once the exam has been graded, you will complete 3 home inspections in your own time at the homes of family and friends and submit them to THITA for marking. The inspections will be graded and upon completion, you will complete the course.

Classroom Style Course

This course takes 5 days in total:

3.5 days are dedicated to theory,
The afternoon of the 4th day and the entire 5th day are used for conducting a Practical Inspection and producing a sample Inspection Report.

3. What does the course cost?

4. What can I charge clients after completing the course?

Once you are a qualified Home Inspector, you can expect to charge between R2 500 and R5 000 for an average private residential inspection. This price may increase depending on the size and type of the property, as well as the purpose of the inspection — whether it’s for rental, sale, or even a specialised energy efficiency inspection for SANEDI.

5. How do I apply for the course?

You can apply in two ways:

Online Application: Simply purchase your chosen course directly from the THITA online shop.
Assisted Application: If you prefer assistance, complete the Assisted Application form.

Once we receive confirmation of your payment—or your first payment if you choose a payment plan—we’ll provide access to your course.

6. How do I get the course material?

Once you purchase the course and your payment is confirmed, you will receive a username and password to log in to our MoodleCloud platform. Moodle is a user-friendly online learning system (also available as a mobile app) that allows you to access all your course materials, track your progress, communicate with instructors, and manage your learning at your own pace — anytime, anywhere.

Moodle makes it easy to organize your studies and stay on top of assignments with simple navigation and helpful tools designed to enhance your learning experience.

If you prefer a more traditional approach or are unfamiliar with Moodle, no problem — we can also provide the complete course material as a downloadable package via Dropbox or another method you choose.

7. Do I qualify for a discount on the course?

To qualify for a discount on the course, keep an eye on our Facebook page and other social media for periodic special offers, or simply check back on the website regularly where all discounts will be listed.

8. Do you offer payment options?

Yes, we offer flexible payment options. You can make arrangements with us or purchase the course through the website by selecting a suitable payment option.

Max Lourens is the author of the THITA Home Inspection Course and developed it in conjunction with ICG College early in 2000. THITA has been providing the Home Inspection Course for more than 20 years.
